Traffic Plan

When your child walks or bikes, they enjoy exercise and fresh air. Walking is good for their mind and body. It also reduces the number of vehicles outside the school!

We encourage you to join with your neighbors to create a Walking School Bus or Bike Train! A Walking School Bus or Bike Train is a supervised group of students that walk or bike a set route and pick up/drop off students along the way.

Remember that pedestrians do not have the right of way when crossing mid-block. Use designated crosswalks and cross Woodington Way and Hammersley Road with the assistance of your friendly crossing guard!

Caregivers, help your students bike safely by reviewing safety rules, checking bike gear and practicing the route and setting a good example. Bikers should always: Follow the rules of the road and obey traffic signs and signals and wear a helmet that fits their head.

MMSD provides yellow school bus transportation to students who live more than 1.5 miles from school, and those who cannot walk due to unusually hazardous transportation conditions. The times and the bus stops are available online. School bus safety includes:

• Wait for the bus on the sidewalk and stay out of the street.
• Enter the bus in a single file.
• Never reach under the bus to get something, ask the driver for help.
• Cross the street at least 10 feet in front of the bus after getting an “ok” sign from the bus driver.

4K Students 4K students ride the bus with our K-5 students. According to district policy, a designated caregiver must meet them at the bus stop. If the caregiver is not at the stop at the published drop off time, the driver will finish the route and make a second attempt, if there is time to do so. The driver will then bring the student back to the school and the caregiver will need to arrange to pick the student up at school.

If possible, park on Winston Dr. or Frisch Ave. in legal parking areas a bit farther away from school. Then walk to drop off or pick up your student. This reduces congestion, helps everybody get some steps in, and gives you a chance to catch up with other caregivers! Obey all street signs:

• “No Parking” means you cannot leave your car unattended.
• These signed areas are often used for school buses or for drop-off and pick-up zones where you may remain in your car.
• “No Stopping, Standing or Parking” means just that. You cannot stop your car at these locations, even during drop off and pick up.
• "Drop off and pick up only" means you can briefly stop to let students get in or out of the vehicle, but you cannot park your vehicle and leave it unattended, even for a few minutes.

Other Wisconsin traffic laws include:

• Motorists must yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing a street at any marked or unmarked crosswalk.
• It is illegal to double-park to drop off/pick up your child, even if you remain in the car. This disrupts traffic and is not safe.
• It is illegal to make a U-turn on the street in front of the school.
